Four Benefits of Chai Tea You’ve Never Heard Of

Chai tea - also known as spiced chai or masala chai, since “chai” translates to “tea” in many Indian languages - is a delicious, aromatic beverage that hit Western culture in the 1990’s. Since then, it’s become a staple in both Indian and American kitchens, as well as a popular beverage in coffee shops.

Chai is typically composed of black tea, ginger, and a mix of spices that can include cardamom, fennel, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and other ingredients. The most authentic chai blends, like our chai tea product, are crushed and never ground, ensuring a rich flavor in every cup.

Obviously chai tea is delicious - but chai has risen in popularity not only for the flavor, but also for the health and wellness benefits its drinkers enjoy.

1. It includes powerful antioxidants - the black tea base in chai is chock full of nutrients that help eliminate free radicals in the body.  In fact, tea includes almost 10 times the antioxidants that fruits and vegetables typically contain! Next time you want a healthy and delicious snack, you may want to skip the banana and brew a quick cup of chai instead.

2. It improves heart health - Cinnamon, one of the main ingredients in many chai tea blends, has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce levels of bad LDL cholesterol. The synergy between the cinnamon and black tea in chai combine to make these effects even more potent, since drinking three or more cups of black tea a day has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by eleven percent.

3. It wakes you up - Chai does contain caffeine, although it’s hard to say precisely how much because of the variable amounts of black tea in each blend. So, on those days when you need an extra pick-me-up to make it through the workday, chai can be a great option. Chai blends typically include less caffeine than coffee, however, so it’s a great replacement if you’re trying to cut your caffeine intake slowly or want to enjoy multiple cups without getting jittery.

4. It can act a natural pain reliever - Several ingredients included in chai tea blends, like cloves, have been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Cloves have been used for over 2000 years as a homeopathic remedy for toothaches and other small pains. Plus, what’s more cozy than curling up in bed with a warm cup of tea when you’re not feeling well?

With its tantalizing, aromatic flavor and a variety of health benefits, we at Mother’s Kitchen Essentials think chai is a perfect beverage for any time. Check out our chai tea blend here, and contact us if you have a suggestion for other topics you’d like to hear about on our blog!
